Bewogen; Pien Hazenberg, Leidy van Leeuwen, Christina Ursu & Suus Zweekhorst

November 4 – November 29, 2026 Opening: November 7, 4:00 p.m.

Leonora van Bijsterveld Hall

In this exhibition, four artists present their responses to the turbulent global developments. The world has entered their studios and has become an integral part of them. Almost everything they create there is imbued with what is happening all over the world, both near and far.

Pien Hazenberg: “I note down what strikes me in society—I observe symptoms.” Pien’s work conveys no message, no act of resistance—it is an archive of the community. The themes often revolve around the fads and hysteria of current events or draw relevant parallels from history. The ephemeral technique of spray-painting on cardboard stands in stark contrast to the haunting images.

Cristina Ursu: She observes and reflects on what is currently happening in the world and in life. Her inspiration comes from moments she has encountered and sketched in her sketchbooks, which she has kept. Her drawn figures are characterized by bold, precise lines in subdued colors; black or red often dominates. If you look longer, you see more and more layers beneath the main lines. She works on a large scale. Her work has a powerful presence!

Leidy van Leeuwen: “ The loss that lives within me is a constant source of inspiration for my work.” Old losses, new losses, big and small. Personal losses or those inspired by my surroundings. Current events are increasingly making their way into her studio. She can no longer ignore them and must do something with them. “Embroidery Against Trump” is her act of resistance against the creeping erosion of our democratic values.

Suus Zweekhorst: Her drawings and paintings stem from anger and a sense of powerlessness when she hears and sees the news. She is particularly outraged by the ease with which a small number of people in power determine the grim fate of millions of people. She channels her emotions into her drawings and paintings, in which viewers often see their own emotions reflected.

Many of her drawings are loose sketches, sometimes in ink or watercolor. They are often diary entries. Sometimes she expresses herself through paint on canvas.

Opening on November 7 at 4:00 p.m., hosted by Suus Zweekhorst.
