A Space for Content, Experimentation, and Collaboration

The ArtLab is an initiative of the board of the Visual Arts, Architecture & Design Department and takes place in the Albert Vogelzaal. It is open to all artist members of the Haagse Kunstkring, from all departments. While the downstairs galleries are intended for the presentation of artists’ own work, the ArtLab focuses on the substantive aspects of being an artist: the ideas, questions, and convictions that give rise to their work.

From Individual Presentations to Collaborative Exploration

The ArtLab’s basic principle is simple: no solo exhibitions, but collaborative presentations involving multiple members. This collaboration can also extend beyond the boundaries of one’s own department. For example, visual artists can invite writers, musicians, designers, or theater makers from our Music department or LTF to participate. It is precisely in this cross-pollination that the strength of the ArtLab lies.

The starting point is always a theme or a current topic. A presentation can also come about when a member brings together artists whose work he or she appreciates and wants to facilitate a dialogue between them.

Working with a Curator

The board recommends working with a curator for each ArtLab. The curator devises the theme, selects the artists, and chooses the works. Experience has shown that this approach yields the strongest presentations. In addition, it is advisable to limit the number of participating artists to two to four. This allows for greater depth and ensures that each artist’s work is truly showcased to its fullest potential.

Room for experimentation

As the name suggests, the ArtLab has the character of a laboratory. Experimentation is the priority, and success is not a prerequisite. The focus is on the ideas behind the work and on what happens when artists share those ideas with one another. During a project, there is therefore room for conversation and discussion. Afterward, an evaluation takes place: What did the collaboration offer the participants? Will there be a follow-up? Will new collaborations emerge?

Organize Your Own ArtLab

Any artist who is a member of the Haagse Kunstkring may apply to organize an ArtLab. It is also possible to invite artists who are not members of the association; they will be screened by the board in advance.
